Read this fun article, just more reasons to love our home and heritage in St Croix Falls.🎉 Happy National Bootleggers Day! Thankfully, the St. Croix River Valley is no longer home to bootleggers—but its Prohibition-era history remains an important part of our local story.

St. Croix Falls and the surrounding St. Croix River Valley played a significant role in bootlegging during Prohibition. The area’s remote pine barrens, dense forests, and rugged terrain—once home to logging camps— provided ideal cover for clandestine stills and illegal alcohol operations. The St. Croix River served as a key transportation route, allowing moonshiners and bootleggers to move liquor quietly and efficiently.

Local residents were heavily involved in brewing and smuggling moonshine, supplying nearby cities such as St. Paul and Minneapolis. The region even attracted notorious criminals, earning a reputation as a Prohibition-era hotbed for illegal alcohol production and distribution. Despite local anti-liquor votes and the repeal of Prohibition, bootlegging activity continued well into the 1930s, driven in part by high taxes on legal liquor and the area’s natural ability to conceal illicit operations. Clashes between bootleggers and law enforcement were not uncommon.

🇺🇸 About Prohibition:
Prohibition was a nationwide ban on the production, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages in the United States. It began on January 17, 1920, under the 18th Amendment, and ended on December 5, 1933, with the ratification of the 21st Amendment.

My great grandfather who farmed next Poplar Lake let a syndicate put up a new building on his farm for their still. He’s mentioned in Ward Moberg’s book, Prohibition Times in the St. Croix River Valley. I was told that he could be seen standing at the end of his driveway shotgun in hand. He was a serious man❤️
